PROGRAM: "Identity and Irrationality in the 2016 American Presidential Election"

The last sixteen years of American politics has been a time of increasing polarization, brinksmanship, and rancor floating atop massive shifts in the ethnic, cultural and economic fault lines of the country. The 2016 presidential election cycle is the pressurized distillation of these trends, exploding into a circus-like fracturing of the Republican Party, fueling fears of a rising American demagoguery, and producing a Democratic Party deadlock between establishment elitism and populist progressivism. Amidst the chaos, cacophony, and confusion, many are left wondering what is happening to the great American experiment. Identity and irrationality seem to define the political struggle unfolding on the national stage.
How might we begin to unpack the dynamics of identity and irrationality in this election season and what do those dynamics suggest about the state of our union?
What are the implications for our work with organizations?

We invite you to join us along with our guest presenter, Edward Shapiro, M.D. in an exploration of these ideas, their implications and their connection to our own work at the 15th Annual ISPSO New York Regional Meeting on Saturday, November 5th, from 8:30 am to 5:00pm at the William Alanson White Institute, 20 West 74th St., New York City.

To kick off the NY Regional Meeting, please join us, along with Ed, for cocktails on Friday evening, November 4th from 5:30pm to 6:45pm at the William Alanson White Institute, followed by an informal dinner at a nearby restaurant.

On Saturday morning, Ed will present ideas for discussion from his many years of work with the themes of identity and irrationality. In the afternoon, participants will explore their own experiences in peer group discussions, linking to ideas stimulated from the morning, followed by a plenary exploration of the themes from the day.

The NY Regional Meeting will conclude on Saturday afternoon with a wine and cheese reception followed by an informal local dinner for anyone interested in further collegiality and discussion.

Registration information including a link to register online is attached along with a full program description and presenter biography. The Friday cocktail reception and Saturday meeting are open to non-ISPSO members. Please encourage any interested member or non-member to join us.
