Michael Diamond

Dr. Michael A. Diamond is Professor Emeritus of Public Affairs and Organization Studies, University of Missouri, Columbia. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1981. His 40 years of writing, teaching, and research have focused on the nexus of psychoanalysis, organizational politics and culture. Following publication of his (1993) book, The Unconscious Life of Organizations, Diamond was awarded the 1994 Harry Levinson Award for Excellence in Consulting from the American Psychological Association (APA). He also received the 1999 William T. Kemper Fellow for Excellence in Teaching and the 2005 Faculty-Alumni Award from the University of Missouri. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has authored and co-authored numerous books including his (2017) Discovering Organizational Identity, University of Missouri Press, and his (2009) Private Selves in Public Organizations, published by Palgrave Macmillan. He is a scholar-practitioner and organizational consultant working with public, private, and nonprofit organizations. He served as director of the Center for the Study of Organizational Change (CSOC) at the University of Missouri for 20 years—an action research center devoted to a psychodynamic approach to organizational change. In addition, he currently serves on the editorial boards of Psychoanalysis, Culture, & Society and Organisational and Social Dynamics. He is a Distinguished Member and past-president of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations (ISPSO), member of the Association for the Psychoanalysis of Culture and Society (APCS) and past member of the International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the American Political Science Association (APSA). He presently is a faculty member and serves on the steering committee of The Gould Center for Psychoanalytic Organizational Study and Consultation of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR) in New York where he is an Honorary Member of (IPTAR).
