The Splitting of the New York Psychoanalytic Society and the construction of psychoanalytic authority

A review of the factors behind that splits that characterized the New York institute in its early years, leading to the formation of the White Institute, The Horney Institute and, eventually, the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center. Two major dynamic factors lay behind these events: the pressure of the newly arrived emigres from Europe, and the pressure to establish a firm link to the professional authority of psychiatry.
