The Changing Dining Hall in the Kibbutz An Empty Heart of a Prolonged Trauma - A Dialogue between an Architect and a Psychoanalyst

Denial of traumatic history increases the danger of repeating the trauma again and again in terms of Freud's repetition compulsion. Our hypothesis is that it is possible to identify clues of the denied trauma in architectural spaces. We chose the Kibbutz dining halls as an illustration of this hypothesis. We had two main research questions: 1- Could we find evidence to the different traumatic events in the Kibbutz community, that reenact in the design, construction and the history of the Kibbutz dining halls? 2- Can we find a common ground and space for a dialogue between Architecture and Psychoanalysis?
