Sources of Hope in Contemporary Organizations

One place hope can be found is in the space where individuals come into intimate contact with their organizations - the role, where this engagement is shaped by creativity, meaningful work and generative relationships. The systems psychodynamic tradition has explored ways in which this type of functioning, in the depressive position, can be supported and fostered by various aspects of the organization. The 'social defense systems' that can serve this purpose in newly emerging contemporary organizations are not well understood; the outlines of them are now only beginning to emerge. For systems psychodynamic thinking to keep pace of these changes, it must revise and refine many of its basic concepts so that they are pertinent to the new forms of organizational life, forms that are characterized by networked relationships, relationships mediated by technology, and knowledge-based work. Die Tradition der systemischen Psychodynamik hat deutlich gemacht, wie diese Art, aus der depressiven Position heraus zu handeln, durch verschiedene Aspekte der Organisation unterstiitzt und gefordert werden kann. Die 'sozialen Abwehrsysteme', die in neu entstehenden gegenwartigen Organisationen dazu beitragen konnen, sind nicht ganz klar; ihre Konturen beginnen erst jetzt deutlich zu werden. Damit das systemisch psychodynamische Denken mit diesen Veranderungen Schritt halten kann, miissen viele seiner Grundbegriffe iiberpriift und verbessert werden, urn angemessener den neuen Formen organisatorischen Lebens gerecht zu werden - Organisationsformen, die gepragt sind durch Netzwerkbeziehungen, durch technologiebestimmte Beziehungen and eine Arbeit, die auf Wissen basiert.
